Welcome from the Head of Department, Professor Ross MacMillan

Welcome to the Department of Sociology at the University of Limerick, Ireland.  We are located within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Sociology is a popular subject choice on the BA Joint Honours.  It is offered as part of the BA in Psychology and Sociology and is also present on many other undergraduate programmes. UL Sociology also offers three taught MAs as well as an exciting PhD (by research) programme. Members of the Department have won numerous awards for teaching excellence, and the Department prides itself on providing a high-quality, intellectually engaging student experience. The values of internationalisation, connectedness, openness, intellectual rigour and a commitment to social justice underpin the Department’s approach to developing students as knowledgeable members of the sociological community and as critical and engaged global citizens. UL Sociology places a particular focus on methodological expertise, a commitment to interpretive rigour, a pursuit of international inter-institutional cross-fertilisation, active engagement with civil society, community and state partners and has a track record in interdisciplinary collaboration. The Department is home to SOCHEOLAS, The Limerick Student Journal of Sociology which is freely available on-line. The Department is also responsible for programmes in Gender, Culture and Society.
