MSc in Mathematical Modelling

The course will be run by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in association with MACSI.

Course description
This course will provide training in applied mathematics techniques and will focus on mathematical models of real world processes, their formulation in terms of differential equations and methods of solution - both numerical and analytical. Central to the course will be practical problems that arise in industry, commerce, engineering and medicine, as well as in the environmental and life sciences. In particular, students will gain hands-on experience with current MACSI projects in collaboration with industry.

The course has been designed by Stokes Professor of Industrial and Applied Mathematics Andrew Fowler (who has experience teaching a similar programme at the University of Oxford). The first two semesters will be examined on coursework from both a mandatory core and a suite of optional courses from which the student can choose. The coursework will be followed by the preparation of a dissertation over the summer months under close supervision. The dissertation will be at research level, and will focus on a problem that arises through MACSI's connections with industry, although there is some flexibility in the choice of dissertation. Additional Information

Research in MACSI and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics focuses on applied mathematics. In particular, there is strong interest in numerical analysis, fluid mechanics, industrial applied mathematics, geoscience, imaging science and inverse problems, commerce and the life sciences.

The minimum entry requirement is a 2:2 undergraduate degree (Level 8 - National Qualifications Authority of Ireland) (or equivalent) in mathematics, or any related numerate discipline.
