On Monday 6^th of November, two students from UL, Miss Niamh Shanahan and Miss Bridget Howard (4^th year Law Plus) competed against Miss Meredith Philips and Mr Isaac Freckleton of the University of Cambridge in the annual UL v Cambridge Moot Court competition. This year the event was kindly sponsored by Holmes O’Malley Sexton Solicitors.

The moot problem focused on issues of ECHR law, in particular, privacy and freedom of expression. The moot was presided over by Mr Pat McInerney (Holmes O’Malley Sexton), Mr Jack Nicholas (BL) and Dr Norah Burns (School of Law).

In his judgment, Mr McInerney addressed the issues raised and ultimately found in favour of the Respondents (Cambridge). The judges were very impressed with the extremely high level of advocacy demonstrated by all participants. The Best Speaker Prize was awarded to Miss Niamh Shanahan of UL.

The event was co-ordinated by Clodagh Dunne, Mooting Officer for the UL Law Society and Dr Lydia Bracken, Director of Clinical Legal Education for the School of Law. Miss Dunne was aided by the Mooting Sub-Committee which comprises of Mr Brian O’Rourke (Trips Officer), Miss Niamh Walshe (1^st year rep), Miss Sarah White (1^st year rep), and the UL Law Society Committee.
