In June 2013 Chief Justice Susan Denham ran an internship programme for law students selected from the Universities in Ireland. Each intern was assigned to assist a judge of the Superior Courts. The School of Law nominated Ms. Deirdre Swift from the Law Plus programme and Ms. Ita Flanagan who is on the LLM in International Commercial Law. Both relished the opportunity and both were fortunate to be assigned to extremely eminent judges. Deirdre was assigned to Chief Justice Denham and said: “Having the opportunity to observe and communicate with Chief Justice Denham was an experience that I will never forget. The option to attend Court regularly and observe the role she played was of great benefit. It also opened my eyes to the people behind the scenes such as the researchers and the registrar and the important role they play in Court system.”
Ita was assigned to former Chief Justice, and current Chancellor of the University of Limerick, Mr. Justice John Murray and observed that “Not alone did we meet Judges, but also great legal researchers. Having access to submissions, the judges library and to Court each day, was fantastic. I cannot emphasise enough how amazing this opportunity is and how enjoyable it has been.”
