The School of Law REPPP project has secured funding to work in partnership with 12 youth crime projects based in localities across Ireland to improve their effectiveness. Known as Garda Youth Diversion Projects these interventions constitute a 13 million euro programme funded by Irish Youth Justice Service and work primarily with young people detected for crime. Youth professionals in the projects work with young people to encourage them to reflect on their behaviour and engage in pro-social activities. Commenting on the new research, Principal Investigator Professor Sean Redmond said ‘This is a hugely important and truly engaged research exercise. Garda Youth Diversion Projects are already well recognised for their excellent work. What they want to do is perform even better by taking account of the best scientific knowledge; that’s where the University of Limerick have been asked to contribute…’ The School of Law will shortly be recruiting two research fellows undertake this work. The research project was announced by David Stanton TD Minister of State for Equality, Immigration and Integration to an audience of over 300 professionals at the annual conference for Garda Youth Diversion Projects in Trim County Meath 7th November.
