Working in partnership with An Garda Síochána, the School of Law at the University of Limerick (UL) is currently in the process of delivering the ‘Policing and Human Rights in Ireland’ module (LA4009) to approximately 585 staff within An Garda Síochána. We are delighted and proud to report that thus far this exciting and important module has garnered excellent feedback from participants within An Garda Síochána of all ranks and grades. This level 8 micro-credentials module is a bespoke training programme for An Garda Síochána, which has been accredited by UL. It is delivered online in an asynchronous format and provides participants with an introduction to the workings and jurisprudence of the European Convention on Human Rights, particularly as it relates to policing in Ireland. It is a co-curricular module, which has involved excellent weekly contributions from both UL staff and senior management within An Garda Síochána. The contributors from An Garda Síochána include Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, Executive Director for Legal and Compliance within An Garda Síochána, Kate Mulkerrins, Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman, Chief Superintendent Alan McGovern, Superintendent Michael McNamara, Inspector Will Gardner, Detective Inspector Donal O’Driscoll, Superintendent Mark O’Neill, Detective Chief Superintendent Tony Howard, Detective Garda Cillian Blake, Detective Chief Superintendent Declan Daly, Detective Sergeant Brian Hanley, Chief Superintendent Peter Duff, and Rose Sweeney, Principal Officer in the Garda National Community Engagement Bureau. Thought-provoking presentations have also been received from guest speakers, including the Honourable Ms Justice Mary Rose Gearty, Clinical Professor of Forensic Psychiatry, Harry Kennedy, and Mr James Leonard, a former drug addict who has frequently been homeless and has spent time in prison after committing crimes linked to his addiction. Mr Leonard provided a fascinating first-hand account of his interactions with An Garda Síochána. Within the School of Law, the academic contributors include Professor Shane Kilcommins, Dr Lydia Bracken, Dr Alan Cusack, Dr Andrea Ryan, Dr Ger Coffey, Professor Paul McCutcheon, Dr Susan Leahy, Dr Michelle Stevenson, Ms Angela Liddy, Dr Caroline Sweeney, Dr Jennifer Schweppe and Dr Amanda Haynes. The Module Coordinator is Dr Caroline Sweeney and the Course Director is Professor Shane Kilcommins.
