On Thursday 16th February, LLM/MA Human Rights in Criminal Justice students benefited from a field trip to Henry Street Garda Station that was an active learning opportunity to experience an operational Garda station. Students were guided through the custody suite by Detective Garda Cathal O’Sullivan (a recent graduate of the LLM in Human Rights in Criminal Justice) that included the reception area, interview rooms, detention cells, evidenser (breathalyser) and were instructed on the operation of the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and spoke with members of An Garda Síochána regarding their experiences. This active learning event provided a unique opportunity for students to enhance their knowledge with a deep and flexible understanding of policing and human rights in contemporary society. The experiential learning activity served to remove discussion from the abstract in academic seminars and facilitate an understanding of the practicalities of policing contemporary society.
