Kate Fleming Mediation Competition in Medical Law

We are delighted to announce the Kate Fleming Mediation Competition in Medical Law which will take place in April in a joint venture between the School of Law and the Graduate Entry Medical School. The competition will involve law and medical students working together in multi-disciplinary teams to settle a claim of medical negligence. Law students will be assisted in preparing the case for the mediation by the medical students. The medical students will also be asked to prepare an expert report on the case.

This competition represents a fantastic opportunity to be learn about mediation in a medical context, explore a medical negligence claim in depth and to learn from your peers in another discipline.

The mediation will take place in mid-April and will be judged by academic staff and practising barrister with extensive experience in Alternative Dispute Resolution. Students will be expected to liaise with their teammates and to engage in independent research in the preparation for the mediation but it is not anticipated that participation will involve a very significant time commitment.  The two best law students will subsequently represent UL in the National Negotiation Competition in Maynooth University in May.

Students interested in participating should contact Eimear.spain@ul.ie by 5pm on Tuesday, March 29th. Interested students will then be allocated a team and given further instructions.
