The State and/of Comparative Law

The conference’s primary theme is the relationship between social and legal norms and institutions. In memory of Roderick A Macdonald (1948-2014) and H Patrick Glenn (1940-2014), both former members of the McGill University Faculty of Law and the Juris Diversitas Advisory Council, particular attention will be given to the diverse themes of their scholarship: ‘common laws’, ‘constitutive polyjurality’, ‘critical legal pluralism’, ‘everyday law’, and ‘legal cosmopolitanism’. Our Plenary speakers include Professor Katharina Boele-Woelki (Utrecht University and President of the International Academy of Comparative Law) and Professor Brian Tamanaha (Washington University (St Louis) and Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Law and Society in a Global Context, Queen Mary University of London (UK)).

The conference is organised by Dr Seán Patrick Donlan (the University of Limerick and President of Juris Diversitas) and Professor Olivier Moreteau (Louisiana State University and Vice-President of Juris Diversitas). The group was founded in 2007. It’s an international, interdisciplinary community for the study of legal and normative mixtures and movements. Juris Diversitas hosts a blog, holds conferences and symposia, organises research projects, and publishes a book series with Ashgate Publishing (UK). The series has published five volumes since October 2014 on comparative law, legal anthropology, legal philosophy, mixed legal systems, and stateless law; volumes on the diffusion of law and on Sami law are in press.
