Leahy and Partners Internship

“I recently completed a two week internship in Leahy and Partners Solicitors. It was a fantastic opportunity to observe the day to day running of an actual law firm. Leahy and Partners is a medium sized firm located on Upper Mallow Street in Limerick City. They provide services in a diverse range of law from Personal Injuries claims to Property Law. Leahy’s managing partner is David Leahy while his father William and his two brothers Edward and William also work within the firm. During my two weeks in Leahy’s, along with 1st year LLB student Stephen McLoughlin, we carried out a range of “nuts and bolts” jobs assisting the partners such as copying and binding. We spent the majority of the time of our internship delivering by hand letters to other solicitors across Limerick City, going to the Post Office with registered post and various banks, and getting documents that needed stamping in the courthouse. We also attended a sitting of the District Court in Ennis with solicitor Alec Gabbet who specialises in Employment Law. The reality of life in a legal practice is much different to what I thought it would be like and to what I study as part of the LLB programme. The atmosphere within Leahy’s was very friendly and all the solicitors and secretaries were very helpful in answering any questions we had and made us feel very welcome. Overall it was a very positive experience and reaffirmed my desire to work within the legal field”.
