Yet another successful Law and Technology Lunchtime Seminar hosted by the International Commercial and Economic Law Group in the Savoy Hotel in Limerick, following the initial New Frontiers in Law and Technology seminar in September. With over 40 practitioners in attendance, Eddie Keane gave a talk on "Help! My Boss is an Algorithm" highlighting the current conflict between ever advancing technology and the impact it is having on the employer/employee relationship. In particular he highlighted the issue of the employees right to private space even when working and how new technology is making that harder to achieve. He also looked at new software that would, based on employee surveillance, turn decision making over to AI driven algorithms. Finally he raised the issue of new duty of care for employers who might need to mandate the use of fitness watches such as Fitbit to ensure the health and safety of their employees, taking employees of hazardous duties when such surveillance alerts them to health issues of the employee.
