A History of the Double Jeopardy Principle A History of the Double Jeopardy Principle

On Monday 12th July, Dr Ger Coffey, Lecturer in Law and member of the Centre for Crime, Justice and Victim Studies, presented a paper entitled ‘A History of the Double Jeopardy Principle: From Classical Antiquity to Modern Area’ at the Annual International Conference on Law organised by the Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER).

This paper examined the processes by which the double jeopardy principle developed as a procedural defence. Through a doctrinal examination of landmarks in the development of the principle, the paper compared and contrasted various theoretical underpinnings in the development of the contemporary application of principle against retrials for the substantially the same criminal offence.
