, ‘Words Matter: Developing Guidelines for Media Reporting on Sexual Violence in Ireland’
Dr Susan Leahy, Senior Lecturer at the School of Law, has been awarded funding by the Irish Research Council New Foundations Scheme for a project with Sexual Violence Centre Cork. The project, ‘Words Matter: Developing Guidelines for Media Reporting on Sexual Violence in Ireland’ will consider the development of media guidelines for reporting on sexual violence in Ireland. The project is informed by the experience of Sexual Violence Centre Cork’s #FixedIt initiative (@FixedItI) which highlights instances of inappropriate language use in Irish newspaper headlines relating to sexual violence. The project will involve consultation with relevant media and criminal justice system stakeholders on the development of guidelines, as well as a conference on the theme of best practice in media reporting in this challenging area.
