On 25th August Dr Laura Cahillane was interviewed by Rachael English on RTE Radio’s Morning Ireland programme. Dr Cahillane explained how Ireland is in the unusual position of having a complete lack of any formal processes for disciplining judges. Though she noted this will change soon with the commencement of various provisions of the Judicial Council Act which will set up a complaints procedure. She said the Supreme Court came under pressure to take action when the Taoiseach and other politicians commented publically that this was a matter for the judiciary. The Supreme Court then took the unprecedented step of requesting former Chief Justice Susan Denham to carry out a report into the conduct of Mr Justice Woulfe. Dr Cahillane commented that the sooner this matter is concluded, the better it will be for everyone concerned.
