Dr Laura Cahillane at the Oireachtas Justice Committee
On Tuesday 28th May, Dr Laura Cahillane contributed to pre-legislative scrutiny on the new Judicial Appointments Commission Bill during the deliberations of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice. Dr Cahillane had previously addressed the Oireachtas Committee on this issue in 2014 when the previous bill was being considered. Together with colleagues Tom Hickey from DCU and David Kenny from TCD, Dr Cahillane gave an opening statement outlining the changes needed to the general scheme of the bill in order to ensure accountability, fairness and transparency and to bring the processes in line with international best practice. She then answered questions from members of the Committee. Representatives from the Law Society of Ireland and the Bar Council also made contributions.
