Dr Laura Cahillane is interviewed by the Irish Examiner and Irish Legal News on Mr Justice Seamus Woulfe and the Golfgate controversy

Dr Laura Cahillane was interviewed for two separate pieces in the Irish Examiner as well as an article for Irish Legal News on the Golfgate controversy involving newly-appointed Supreme Court Judge, Mr Justice Seamus Woulfe. In the various interviews, Dr Cahillane remarked that the decision to request former Chief Justice Denham to conduct an inquiry was ‘very interesting and quite unprecedented’. She acknowledged that ‘there is a hiatus since the relevant provisions of the Judicial Council Act have not yet been commenced but it is a hiatus that has represented the status quo since the foundation of the State since we have never had formal mechanisms for disciplining members of the judiciary’. Dr Cahillane also pointed out that any recommendations made by Ms Justice Denham would carry no legal authority. Though, they might carry a strong moral authority. She also explained that if, following the conclusion of the Denham report, either if a recommendation is made for the judge to resign or if this is not felt appropriate, then the Oireachtas could still take the step of commencing the Art 35.4.1 procedure to remove the judge if this is felt necessary.
