Dominant interpretations on events like the Charlie Hebdo Attacks tend to focus on big cultural divisions that lead to social discomfort. Oftentimes the discussion is framed as a clash between Islamic and western values. The discussion will question this framework and propose alternative ways of thinking about the social issues at stake.

Ioanna Tourkochoriti is a Lecturer at the School of law of NUIG. Previously she lectured at Harvard University, at Carleton University (Canada) and at the University of South Carolina. She holds a PhD and a MA from EHESS – Paris, an LLM from Paris II and an LLB from Athens Law School Greece. She is currently working on a project comparing EU and US anti-discrimination Law. Ekaterina Yahyaoui Krivenko (LLM Freiburg i Breisgau 1998, DES Geneva 2000, PhD Geneva 2004) is a Lecturer at the Irish Centre for Human Rights, School of Law, National University of Ireland, Galway. She is also a member of the Quebec Bar. Currently she leads the project “International Protection of Human Rights as a Constitutional Issue: Promises, Problems and Prospects” funded by the EU FP7 Marie Curies Career Integration Grant. Her research interests include general public international law, global governance and international constitutionalism/rule of law, human rights with a particular emphasis on women’s rights, relationship between Islam and human rights, international refugee and migration law, comparative law and legal cultures, feminist analyses of law, and law and humanities.
