Career Opportunities as Lawyer-Linguists Career Opportunities as Lawyer-Linguists

On 24 September 2019, Muiris O’Connor and Julie O’Farrell, both lawyer-linguists at the Court of Justice of the European Union, provided a fascinating presentation to undergraduate students on career opportunities as lawyer-linguists at the Court. Muiris, who graduated from UL with an LLB in Law and European Studies, provided an overview of his work in the English-language translation unit. Julie in turn discussed her work in helping to develop the embryonic Irish-language translation unit. Muiris and Julie highlighted the many benefits both of working at the Court and living in Luxembourg. They also outlined the various points of entry for aspiring lawyer-linguists. An open competition organised by the European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) is the standard method of recruitment. For more information, see: and click on lawyer-linguist. Of particular interest for UL undergraduate students, five-month paid internships are also available. For more information, see: and click on traineeships. The event was organised by Dr John Lombard and Dr Caroline Sweeney.
