Shane Kilcommins has been appointed to the Advisory Board of the SAFE(R) SPACE Project, which is funded by the Irish Research Council Research for Policy and Society Scheme 2017-2019. The aim of the SAFE(R)SPACE project is to explore the relationship between social disability, space, and (un)safety in the context of disabled people’s encounters with, and fear of, violence and hostility in Ireland. Despite a body of research on disability hate crime and institutional abuse within disability studies and health-based disciplines, no work to date has explored the impact of violence and hostility on disabled people’s everyday spatial perceptions and practices, nor how they might understand and articulate ‘safe(r) space’.
