On Tuesday 24th May, School of Law PhD candidates Mary Tumelty and Stephen Strauss-Walsh presented papers at the 7th Annual Conference of the Irish Society of Comparative Law held in NUIG.

Mary’s paper entitled “Calculating the true ‘cost’ of medical negligence litigation: perspectives from Ireland & the UK” detailed the disparity in claim resolution time between the jurisdictions, presented a comparative analysis of the procedural differences in these claims and discussed proposals for reform in Ireland. The issues raised by the paper were of particular interest given the proposals by the High Court Working Group (2010) and the anticipated implementation of pre-action protocols, provided for by the recent amendments to the Civil Liability & Courts Act 2004 by the Legal Services Regulation Act 2015 (yet to be commenced).

Stephen presented a paper entitled: ‘A Comparative Analysis of Victim Centrality in Eighteenth-Century England and Ireland’. Stephen's paper focused on dimensions of difference between victims of crime in Ireland and England in the 18th Century.
