PRESENTATION TITLE
Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy at the University of Limerick
ABSTRACT
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool used to solve diverse problems related to the characterization of gases, liquids, solutions, and solid materials. The technique is often used on its own or in conjunction with other spectroscopic, analytical, and/or computational techniques to determine molecular or crystallographic symmetry, structure, and dynamics. Recently, a 9.4 T (400 MHz) solid-state NMR spectrometer has been commissioned in the MSSI/Bernal Institute. In the interest of introducing UL researchers to solid-state NMR spectroscopy, an overview of the technique will be provided in this presentation. Topics addressed include information available from solid-state NMR experiments relevant to research in the MSSI/Bernal Institute, an introduction to the solid-state NMR spectrometer housed in the MSSI building, and tips for choosing and submitting samples for solid-state NMR analysis. It is hoped that the audience comes away with an introductory grasp of why one should be interested in solid-state NMR spectroscopy, what the 400 MHz solid-state NMR spectrometer at UL can do, and how to best utilize this instrument to fulfil your research goals.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Dr Alexandra Faucher is a research fellow at the University of Limerick. She is currently managing the solid-state NMR facility in the MSSI/Bernal Institute. Her background is in experimental solid-state NMR spectroscopy; she received her B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, during which she studied under Prof. Roderick E. Wasylishen. The focus of her Ph.D. research was on expanding the range of accessible nuclei in the NMR periodic table to include traditionally “challenging” quadrupolar nuclei, e.g., 75As, 87Sr, and 121/123Sb. Her postdoctoral fellowship, carried out under Prof. Vladimir K. Michaelis at the University of Alberta, continued in this area of research.
