Choosing where to undertake postgraduate studies can be a life-changing decision that profoundly influences the rest of your academic life and, indeed, your career. Taught Postgraduate and LLM programmes

Our unique Taught LLM programmes are structured to meet industry demands. As a result, UL can boast an exceptional employment rate that has been higher than the national average for third-level institutions for over 10 years.

 

Master of Laws (General) 

This award-wining LLM (Postgraduate Course of the Year in Law at the GradIreland Higher Education Awards) will enhance your transferrable skills and knowledge in a variety of legal subjects. The range of subject choice allows you to develop your unique career profile. The GradIreland judges said this LLM is an "Excellent course with fantastic stakeholder collaborations and a strong focus on employability."

 

Master of Laws/Master of Arts in Human Rights in Criminal Justice

This programme will give you an understanding of the interaction between human rights and criminal justice in the 21st century with an emphasis on studying the legal actors, supervisory bodies, and institutions central to the field. 

 

Master of Laws in International Commercial Law

A very successful programme, the LLM in International Commercial Law allows law graduates to specialise in commercial law in multi-jurisdictional scenarios. The programme offers core commercial law modules and guest lectures by practitioners to complement your academic experience. 

Master of Laws in Corporate Governance

The School of Law together with the Kemmy Business School, is currently developing a Master of Laws in Corporate Governance (LLM) programme. This programme aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to discharge a variety of senior professional roles in the company secretarial, governance and compliance fields. The practical skills and up-to-date knowledge acquired will assist graduates in discharging professional duties, including advising the board of directors and other relevant stakeholders with regard to best practice in corporate governance, and ensuring that organisations operate in accordance with applicable financial and legal requirements. Graduates will also have the added benefit of an LLM qualification.

Postgraduate Diploma in Proceeds of Crime & Asset Investigation

The School of Law in partnership with the Criminal Assets Bureau is currently developing a Postgraduate Diploma in Proceeds of Crime & Asset Investigation. The proposed Level 9 Criminal Assets Bureau: Postgraduate Diploma in Proceeds of Crime & Asset Investigation will be delivered over one year and delivered through residential modules at the University of Limerick coupled with on the job experiential learning at the Criminal Assets Bureau. Proposed modules include: Multi-Agency Proceeds Of Crime Investigation, Darknet & Open Source Intelligence Investigation (OSINT), Forensic Accounting and Financial Reports National and international best practice in proceeds of crime investigation: law, procedure, policy and practice, Proceeds of Crime Investigation: Work Based Learning. The proposed programme seeks to support and guide members of the Criminal Assets Bureau, An Garda Síochána and other public bodies that investigate criminal conduct and it’s proceeds.

The School of Law is delighted to offer a range of online blended learning programmes

 

Graduate Certificate in Serious Crime Investigation 

The Graduate Certificate in Serious Crime Investigation is a one-year, full-time online programme designed for graduates of the special purpose award in Serious Crime Investigation delivered by The Garda Training College in Templemore, Co. Tipperary. The Certificate is ideally suited to members of An Garda Síochána who are looking to capitalize on their existing expertise in the field of modern policing and develop an advanced and integrated understanding of the legal issues which surround serious crime investigation.

 

Masters of Arts in Serious Crime Investigation 

The Master of Arts in Serious Crime Investigation is a one-year, full-time programme designed for graduates of the level 9 Postgraduate Diploma in Serious Crime Investigation, accredited by the University of Limerick or an equivalent programme. The degree is ideally suited to members of an Garda Síochána who are looking to capitalize on their existing expertise in the field of modern policing and develop an advanced and integrated understanding of the legal issues which surround serious crime investigation.

 

LL.M./M.A. in Human Rights in Criminal Justice (Online) 

The LLM/MA in Human Rights in Criminal Justice (Online) is two-year part-time programme. It comprises two semesters of both taught and research elements. On a practical level, this Masters programme will prepare graduates for work in the field of international human rights and criminal justice, policing, domestic and international organisations, non-governmental organisations and as individual advocates incorporating human rights and criminal justice theory into practice. 

 

LLM or PhD by Research

The School of Law provides excellent resources for those undertaking an LLM or a PhD by Research. To get an idea of the research topics you can read about our current LLM students. Each research student is entitled to a desk and computer in a dedicated Postgraduate Centre with an administrator and access to world-class library facilities. There are valuable scholarship opportunities and students also have access to a fund for travel to conferences and/or fieldwork (max €800). Throughout the year research seminars, workshops, and winter and summer schools are run providing postgraduate students with essential research skills.
