Wireless

Wireless access is available in a large number of areas around the campus - Wireless coverage overview

The University of Limerick offers three wireless services on the campus:

ULsecure - An authenticated and encrypted service offering staff access to the same services that they would obtain from their desk.
ulwireless - An unencrypted service offering access to the University's public services (email, internet etc) and aimed at students and guests to the University who do not have university accounts.
eduroam - An authenticated and encrypted service offering access to visitors to the University from other Universities who are also running the EDUROAM service (staff and students who are visiting other Universities throughout Europe will be able to access Eduroam at these sites).

An authenticated and encrypted service offering staff access to the same services that they would obtain from their desk.

This is the preferred method of access to the wireless network for staff. Only staff with University accounts may access the ULSecure service and all the data passing between your laptop and the network is encrypted so that it cannot be 'eavesdropped' on. To use this service, you have to configure your PC's wireless ULsecure profile manually with the settings below or use the automatic configuration tool:

Configuration Tool: https://802.1x-config.org/?idp=38
Instructions: Configuration Guide

Configure your PC's wireless ULsecure profile as below:

  • Network/SSID: ULsecure
  • Network Authentication Method: WPA2 or WPA (also sometimes called WPA2-PEAP, WPA2-RADIUS, or WPA2-Enterprise)
  • Data Encryption Method: AES (if WPA2) or TKIP (if WPA)
  • EAP Type: PEAP
  • Authentication Protocol: MS-CHAP-V2
  • Tick Verify the server’s identity by validating the certificate
  • Tick Connect to these servers and type val.ul.ie
  • Tick DigiCert Assured ID Root CA
  • Ensure that you have Automatically use my windows logon name and password box un-selected. Located in Configure under the heading Select Authentication method.

When connecting you will be asked for a username and password.  Enter your UL email address as the username and network password.

Once connected, you will be able to access the IT Systems.  Access to ULsecure will be denied if a laptop using this service is not running the latest operating system patches and anti-virus software.

Wireless users are asked by the University of Limerick  to agree to the University's Code of Conduct before you can use the service. Data between your PC and the network is unencrypted and there is some risk that this could be eavesdropped.

There is no protection on this service, other laptops using the service may not have their anti-virus and operating system patches up-to-date. It is most important if you do not wish for your computer to become 'infected' that you have your own operating system patches and anti-virus software up-to-date.

The services that are available on ulwireless are the same services that would be available if you were connecting via the internet.

After connecting to the service you must open a browser window to agree to the Code of Conduct policy (note: POP mail etc will not work until you have opened the browser window and agreed to the Code of Conduct).

Eduroam (for a fuller description click here)  is a service that allows roaming research and educational users to more easily obtain wireless network access at participating sites. When attaching to the eduroam wireless network at the visited site users will be prompted to authenticate and should provide the credentials that they use at their home site. The user is then authenticated against an authentication server at their home site, and if authentication succeeds the user is granted wireless network access.

This is the preferred method of access for visitors to UL from other Universities that have an EDUROAM service. The visitor authenticates by giving their username and password assigned by their home University. Data between the laptop and the network is encrypted.

Automated tool for eduroam configuration for UL Staff and Students:

Visitors to the University of Limerick should download the CAT tool from your home institution.

The University of Limerick has an Eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT) available to UL staff and students to configure your wireless settings for access to the eduroam wireless service on campus and while roaming. The download link can be found here
